Potential Anti-Aging and Immune modulating effects of Vitamin E

Wednesday, February 14, 2007

In a study involving in vivo and in vitro aspects, results indicate that supplementation with vitamin E may improve the age-related decline in effective immune synapse formation of CD4+ T cells. In vitro analysis of purified CD4+ T cells from the spleens of young and old mice found CD4+ T cells from old mice to be significantly less likely to recruit signaling proteins to the immune synapse compared to CD4+ T cells from young mice. However, treatment with vitamin E was found to increase the percentage of CD4+ T cells from old mice capable of forming an effective immune response. Similar results were observed in vivo, with vitamin E supplementation. Additionally, while naive T cells from old mice were found to be more defective in immune synapse formation, compared with memory cells, they were also more responsive to vitamin E supplementation. Thus, the authors of this study conclude, "These data show, for the first time, that vitamin E significantly improves age-related early T cell signaling events in naive CD4+ T cells."

What Makes Gamma Tocopherol Superior to Alpha Tocopherol.

While the alpha tocopherol form of vitamin E has long been valued as a potent antioxidant, its little-known cousin, gamma tocopherol, may be equally important in promoting health and protecting against disease. Found in nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils, gamma tocopherol accounts for about 70% of the vitamin E in the North American diet.

Unlike alpha tocopherol, gamma tocopherol is a potent defender against disease-provoking compounds in the body known as reactive nitrogen oxides. Furthermore, gamma tocopherol has been found to reduce inflammation, regulate factors that guard against certain cancers, and activate genes involved in protecting against Alzheimer's disease.

The latest research should compel all health-conscious adults to take a closer look at gamma tocopherol, a previously underestimated member of the vitamin E family.

The primary purpose of supplementing with vitamin E is to suppress damaging free radicals. Scientific studies have identified the gamma-tocopherol form of vitamin E as being critical to human health.

Research shows that sesame lignans increase gamma-tocopherol levels in the body while reducing free radical damage. In response to these findings, Life Extension has reformulated the popular Gamma E Tocopherol supplement to replace tocotrienols with sesame lignans.

This formula provides more gamma-tocopherol than the previous version, and it is fortified with standardized sesame lignans to augment the antioxidant effects of gamma-tocopherol.
