Coenzyme Q-10 for Diabetes, Cancer, Sport and Other ailments

Diabetes

It is possible to prove that the diabetes is one of the most common disturbances that lead to heart disease. Fortunately, daily intake of 60 mg of Co Q-10 can reduce blood sugar levels in the course of six months. This is especially important to individuals suffering from atherosclerosis, a frequent complication of the disorder.

Cancer

The presence of cancerous tumors in the body is strongly correlated to low blood-level concentrations of Co Q-10. This fact has been proven by several studies and the inversely proportional dependence between these factors is widely accepted. In the opinion of Dr. R. Atkins, "Co Q-10 must be a constant part of the cancer therapy. If the conclusions of studies are valid in the means of all people, then we possibly revealed something that is capable of completely stopping some forms of malignant increase... ".

Several years ago, Danish researchers conducted a study in which they gave 390 mg of Co Q-10 daily to a group of 10 women with metastasized breast cancer. In four of the women, remission of the disease begun after a few months. A cancer which had extended to the liver completely disappeared after 11 months in one of the women. Subsequently, doctors established that the woman was completely healthy.

It is obvious that dosage is of critical importance. In an earlier study also conducted by Danish scientists, a 90 mg dosage of Co Q-10 daily was given to different groups of patients with breast cancer. Although it helped prolong the patient’s lives, this dose did not stop the swift spreading of the malignant increase.

Similar to other forms of cancer therapy, Co Q-10 gives the immune system a much needed energy boost, and does not have any direct influence on the malignant tumor. If this is actually true, then the compound is at a great disadvantage because of limitations assigned to the types of research funded by the National Cancer Institute (USA): accordingly, the institute permits studies of potentially therapeutic substances only if they possess an “effective action”. The Institute defines "effective action" as the ability to directly destroy malignant cells. If the substance counteracts the development of the cancer through a different method, while it does not directly kill malignant tumor cells, then it is not considered to posses "effective action". Therefore Co Q-10 (or any other harmless, nontoxic substance, which helps the body manage cancer) is precluded from consideration and termed "ineffective". This situation, unfortunately, compels scientists to direct their efforts to the advancement of radiation therapy and chemotherapy at the expense of other promising treatments.

Other ailments

The complete therapeutic potential of Co Q-10 even until now remains unexplained. Although this compound may not be the legendary panacea of myths and folk tales, many studies have demonstrated the wide spectrum of its possible applications. For example, people with Alzheimer's disease who take Co Q-10 together with iron, vitamin B6, and Ginkgo Biloba have used it as a successful means of decreasing the symptoms of dementia, senility and progressive memory loss. In a study, the symptoms of some participants improved so much that the doctors considered them to be “back to normal.”

Other studies indicate the possible role of Co Q-10 in helping prevent miscarriage, in the treatment of Mainer's disease, peripheral paralysis of facial nerves, deafness, muscle dystrophy, Huntington’s disease, ulcers and lowered production of spermatozoid.

Since Co Q-10 strengthens the immune system, it is a useful addition to the treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome. For the same reason, it may possibly help individuals suffering from AIDS.

Sports

Partly because Co Q-10 is an antioxidant, and partly because it helps the body convert food into energy, this compound is naturally helps fight against fatigue. Co Q-10 is especially valuable for the serious athlete, like a marathon runner, who is subjected to constant loads under aerobic conditions. This activity generates free radicals that are capable of damaging mitochondria, which are small "power stations" inside each cell. In this respect, Co Q-10 employs its protective action as an anti-oxidant. In many cases, athletes who reach a premature level of exhaustion and can longer compete successfully are, in reality, the victims of a Co Q-10 insufficiency.
