Weight loss supplements: don’t wait on miracles

Most companies that market weight loss supplements assert that diets can be avoided by making use of their advertised products. However, this is far from the truth. A regimented diet should be maintained while using these supplements. Nutritional supplements contain small doses of biologically active components; therefore their effect is weak and will only appear if you follow a balanced dieting plan. Consequently, to achieve a desired effect, observing basic weight loss principles such as a limited caloric intake, a reduction in fat intake and a reduction of simple carbohydrates are recommended.

Weight loss supplements are much safer compared to medicines that are intended for the same purpose, and if used correctly, there should be no significant side-effects.

There are several known weight loss supplements or excessive weight management supplements. The first of these are known as nutritional supplements that decrease appetite. The most popular supplement in this category is prepared out of the fruit of Garcinia cambogia. Garcinia cambogia contains Hydroxycitric acid, an acid responsible for the reduction of appetite. Hydroxycitric acid also prevents fat synthesis in the adipose tissue.

The next most common form of weight loss supplements are preparations that contain caffeine like substances known as catechins. These substances are present in coffee and black and green tea. Their function is to reduce the synthesis of adipose tissue and to increase energy consumption.

Vitamin-mineral supplements are necessary to treat obesity and excess weight, especially if for those on a low-calorie diet. Generally, a significantly reduced diet leads to a reduced content of vitamins in the body that need to be replenished. When treating weight problems, it is very important to focus attention on the supplements which contain chromium. Chromium acts on carbohydrate metabolism and contributes to reduction of adipose tissue.

The next group of supplements uses the food fibers. Food fibers used for nutritional supplements that target body mass are generally made from plant cellulose, however, cellulose does not actually affect substance exchange, rather it stimulates peristalsis of the bowels. Food fibers derived from the sea, such as chitosan, are much more efficient. Chitosan is a polymer that is extracted from the exoskeleton of crustaceans. Chitosan is a good absorbent, cholesterol reducer, glucose and fat reducer, that also reduces the absorption of fat and cholesterol in the body.

Closely related to the sea-derived food fiber supplements, are the nutritional supplements that are produced from seaweeds. The useful effects of sea kale are well known. For example, kale contains iodine, which stimulates the hormone synthesis of the thyroid gland and strengthens the basic metabolism. Therefore many weight loss supplements are made from seaweeds, such as Laminaria. They contain alginates which are soluble food fibers, that also possess the ability to reduce excess fats in the body.

There are supplements, such as teas, which possess a soft laxative and diuretic effect. These supplements can not be taken constantly; with prolonged use they may render undesirable effects on the intestinal wall tone, decreasing normal bowel movement. Therefore, these supplements should only be used for a 10-14 day period, after which time it is necessary to discontinue their use for, at least, two weeks.

Many weight loss supplements are designed to eliminate cellulite. These are the supplements which possess a diuretic effect, because the sections of subcutaneous fatty tissue considered cellulite contain more liquid than common fatty cells. However, if your aim is to reduce cellulite, simply using nutritional supplements will not be sufficient. Complex action, for example massage, is necessary.

You may want to be wary when choosing the right weight loss supplements. It is not completely uncommon to find supplements with a composition that does not clearly correspond to the promised effect. For example, because of the way it has been advertised, many consumers still believe that the supplements based on pineapple will "burn fat". In fact, the enzyme Bromelain found in pineapples, does possess the ability to digest proteins, thus contributing to overall digestion, but it does not have any effect on fats.

Nutritional supplements may have limitations for their use. As a rule, these limitations depend on the dose of active ingredient; therefore the packaging of nutritional supplement must have indications for how long it is safe to take this preparation.
