Amino acids for releasing growth hormone and brain functioning support

By Leonid Magidenko, MD.
Monday, August 06, 2007

Substances releasing growth hormone.

Substances releasing growth hormone stimulate production of growth hormone in the organism. Human growth hormone is accumulated in hypophysis and is secreted by the body as a reaction to sleep, exercises and limited (low) food intake.

Benefits:

  • helps to burn fat and change it into energy and muscles;
  • improves resistance to illnesses;
  • speeds up healing of injuries;
  • helps to restore tissues;
  • strengthens collagen tissues for healthy joints and ligaments;
  • stimulates protein synthesis for muscle growth;
  • reduces the level of urea in blood and urine.

The most important substances releasing growth hormone are amino acids: Ornithine, Arginine, triphosphate, Glycine and Tyrosine, which act synergically (together more effectively than separately) with vitamin В6, niacin amide, zinc, calcium, potassium and vitamin С, to activate nocturnal secretion of growth hormone. The peak of secretion of growth hormone is approximately 90 minutes after falling asleep.

Natural level of growth hormone reduces with age. Approximately at the age of 50 the production of growth hormone practically stops completely. But by means of adding to the food amino acids and vitamins stimulating secretion of growth hormone, we can restore its production up to the level of a young man.

Dynamic amino acid duet: Ornithine and Arginine.

Ornithine and Arginine, two of a number of amino acids involved in the secretion of growth hormone by human body are today among the most popular amino acid supplements, mainly because they potentially can help to lose weight and improve the shape of your body while you are sleeping (that is when the growth hormone is being secreted).

While some hormones encourage the body to accumulate fat, growth hormone acts as fat mobilizer, helping us not only to keep fit, but also to be more energetic. Ornithine stimulates secretion of insulin and helps insulin to act as an anabolic (favoring muscle growth) hormone, the use of which has been increasing among body-builders.

Taking of additional amount of ornitine helps to increase the level of Arginine in the body (as a matter of fact, Arginine is formed from ornithine, and ornithine from Arginine during constant cyclic changes). Because ornithine and Arginine are so tightly intertwined, all the characteristics and warnings about each of them are actual for the other.

As a supplement, ornithine works better if it is taken at the same time in the same way (on the empty stomach with water or juice – with no proteins).

Arginine.

This amino acid is necessary for normal functioning of hypophysis, together with ornithine, phenylalanine and other chemical compounds of the nervous system. Arginine is required for synthesis and release of growth hormone of hypophysis.

The need in Arginine is especially great for men as the semen liquid consists 80% of this protein constriction material and its deficit can result in sterility.

Benefits:

  • increases the amount of spermatozoa in male sperm;
  • improves immune reactions and healing of injures;
  • assists metabolism of the accumulated fat and raises the muscle tonus.

The best natural sources: nuts, popcorn, gelatin desserts, chocolate, brown rice, oats, raisins, sunflower and sesame seeds, bread made of groats and other products rich in protein.

L-Arginine is produced in pills or powders. It is better to be taken on the empty stomach (with water or juice) 2 g (2,000 mg) just before having a rest. Additional benefit, for instance for muscle tonus, can be gained by taking 2 g (2,000 mg) on an empty stomach (with water or juice) one hour before active physical activity.

Warning: Never give to children in the period of active growth (it may cause gigantism and in some cases, schizophrenia). Arginine and food rich in Arginine is contra-indicated in case of herpes. It is not recommended to take doses over 20-30 g a day. They can cause thickening of joints and bone deformation.

Advice: Arginine is necessary for adults over 30 years of age as its secretion by hypophysis stops almost completely. If you notice that your skin gets rougher or thicker, it means you are taking too much Arginine. Intake of heavily excessive amounts during several weeks can cause this side effect but these phenomena are reversible; just reduce the intake.

Every physical trauma increases the need for Arginine production. Combination of L-Arginine and L-ornithine can help stimulate weight loss.

Lysine.

This nonessential amino acid is vitally important for construction of critical proteins of the body. It is necessary for growth, restoration of tissues, production of anti-bodies, hormones and ferments.

Benefits:

  • Helps to reduce the probability and/or prevent herpes infection;
  • utilizes fatty acids necessary for energy production;
  • It helps for male sterility.

The best natural sources: Fish, milk, sugar-beans, meat, cheese, yeasts, soy products, all products rich in protein.

L-lysine is usually produced in capsules of 500 mg. The average doe is 1-2 capsules a day with meals.

Advice: If you easily get tired, unable to concentrate and your eyes have tendency to engorge, or if you suffer from occasional vomiting, dizziness, hair shedding, it may be due to deficit of lysine.

With age people, especially males, need more lysine than in their youth. Some grain proteins lack lysine, for instance, gliadine (in wheat). Lysine supplements in bakery products improve the quality of their proteins. If you suffer from herpes, you will definitely benefit from lysine supplements (3-6 g daily) combined with food rich in lysine.

DL-phenylalanine.

This form of nonessential amino acid of phenylalanine is a mixture of equal parts of D-(artificial) and L-(natural) phenylalanine. Producing and activating morphine-like hormones called endorphins, it strengthens and prolongs natural pain-killing mechanisms of the body in case of injures, accidents and diseases.

Certain enzyme systems in the body constantly destroy endorphins but DL-phenylalanine effectively suppresses these enzymes, enabling painkilling endorphins to do their job.

Many people with null reaction to usual pain-killers react to DL-phenylalanine. People suffering from chronic headaches usually have reduced activity of endorphins in blood and spinal fluid.

As DL-phenylalanine can restore normal levels of endorphins, it can help the body to reduce pain in a natural way—i.e., without medication. Moreover, as DL-phenylalanine can selectively block pain, it can do away with old chronic discomfort, leaving untouched natural protective mechanisms against short-termed acute pain (burns, cuts, etc.)

DL-phenylalanine effect often is equal or even exceeds the effect of morphine and other opium derivatives, but DL-phenylalanine differs from pain-killers and narcotics in the following: it is not addictive; it becomes more effective as the course of time without addiction increases; has a marked anti-depression effect; can provide elongated (up to a month) pain relieving effect without additional treatment; can be combined with other medicines and therapies for better effect and without unfavorable interaction.

Benefits:

  • Acts as a natural painkiller in case of some injuries of cervical spine (e.g. concussion due to a road accident), osteoarthritis, rheumatic arthritis, migraine, spasms in hand, leg muscles cramps, post surgical pains, neuralgia.

Usually DL-phenylalanine is produced in pills of 500 mg. Correction of dosage should be done individually depending on the strength of pain. 4 pills a day (2 pills approximately 15 minutes before meal) is the best initial mode of taking DL-phenylalanine.

Reduction of pain is likely to come during the first 4 days but in some cases it can come in 3-4 weeks.

If you don’t feel significant relief of pain during first 3 weeks take doubled initial dosage for 2-3 more weeks.

If the treatment is still ineffective, stop taking the medicine. It has been proven that 5-15% patients do not react to painkilling qualities of DL-phenylalanineа.

Warning: DL-phenylalanine is counter-indicated to pregnant women with phenylketonuria, as it increases blood pressure. People suffering from high blood pressure and those with heart disease have to consult with their physician before they start to take DL-phenylalanine. However, usually it is safe to take it, but only after meals.

Advice: Once an individual begins taking DL-phenylalanine, pain usually abates during the first week. Then one can reduce the dosage until the minimal necessary dose is established. Whatever daily dose you are taking, it should be evenly distributed during the day.

Some people need only one week of DL-phenylalanine intake per month; others have to take it constantly. An interesting fact is that many people who do not react to usual painkillers react to DL-phenylalanine.

Phenylalanine.

Phenylalanine is a nonessential amino acid, which is a neuro mediator (a chemical compound, which transmits signals between neural cells in the brain). In the body it changes into norepinephrine and dopamine (mediators of excitement, which provide vivacity and vitality). It should not be confused with DL-phenylalanine.

Benefits:

  • Reduces the feeling of hunger;
  • increases sexual desire;
  • improves memory and brain activity;
  • eases depression.

The best natural sources: all products rich in protein, bakery, soy products, curds, dry skimmed milk, almond, peanut, beans, sesame and pumpkin seeds.

It is produced in pills of 250 - 500 mg. To regulate appetite, take one pill 1 hour before meals with water or juice (without proteins). To maintain vitality and energy pills are to be taken between meals but also with juice or water (without protein).

Warning: Phenylalanine is counter-indicated with phenylketonuria and skin cancer.

Please remember it needs Vitamin C for proper absorption. Phenylalanine doesn’t cause addiction but it may increase blood pressure!

If you suffer from weak heart or high blood pressure, it is advisable to consult with your physician before you start taking phenylalanine. In most cases people with high blood pressure can take phenylalanine after meals, but please consult your doctor first!

Tryptophan.

Tryptophan is a nonessential amino acid, used by brain together with vitamin В6, niacin (or niacinamid) and magnesium for production of serotonin (the neuro-mediator which transmits signals between the brain structures). It is one of the biochemical mechanisms of sleep in the body.

Benefits:

  • helps to cause natural sleep;
  • reduces pain sensitivity;
  • acts as non-medical antidepressant;
  • helps to reduce anxiety and tension;
  • reduces symptoms of alcohol dependency;
  • may protect against alcoholism.

The best natural sources: curds, milk, meat, fish, turkey, banana, peanuts and all products rich in protein.

Tryptophan is produced in pills of 500 Mg.

When used for relaxation, it should be taken during the day between meals with juice or water, but not milk or other products containing protein.

As a sleep-inducer, L-Tryptophan works the best in the dosage of 500 mg together with 100 mg of vitamin В6, 100 mg of niacinamid and 130 mg chelate magnesium 90 minutes before going to bed (with juice or water – no proteins.)

Many doctors, including doctor David Bressler, who once worked in the Center of Pain Control at University of California, advise to take an additional pill of Tryptophan half-hour before going to bed, in order to sleep all the night without waking up.

Warning: single unit doses over 2 g are not recommended though successful tests by Research Institute in Psychiatry in Maryland showed that there is no danger of addiction to Tryptophan or of its overdose (Due to the fact that tryptophan is a natural part of our body, the organism doesn’t have to change any functions to use it as is the case happens with medication).

If you are taking L-Tryptophan, you have to use the full balanced B-complex (50 - 100 mg of B1, В3 и В6) in the morning and in the evening with meals. You can prolong the relaxing effect of Tryptophan if you take it in the ratio 2 to 1 with niacinamid (2 doses of Tryptophan and 1 of niacinamid). Niacinamid has an antidepressant effect.
