The best natural remedies for Depression

By Leonid Magidenko, MD.
Wednesday, February 06, 2008

Certain nutrients have been shown to improve the human body’s ability to adjust to psychologically demanding situations, helping to improve mood as well as having anti-depressive effects.

An extract of a deep sea fish Garum armoricum is called “Adapton.” The active components of Adapton have been shown to help the body to adjust to emotionally and physically stressful situations. In England, Adapton is used for its anti-depressive effects.

A study showed that the blood level of Gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABa) was much lower in men with Depression than in healthy individuals. The low level of GABa directly correlated with the length of illness. Plasma GABa level could be a biochemical sign of the susceptibility to Depression. A low GABa state in Depression supports the biochemical theory of Depression.

One study reveled that normalization of L-tryptophan measured in the red blood cells was consistent with improvement of the symptoms of Depression. The synergistic effect of

L-tryptophan and anti-depression medication from monoamine oxidase inhibitor groups was researched. L-tryptophan appeared to augment the anti-depression effects of medications. This study encouraged further investigation of the role of L-tryptophan in developing Depression and serotonin mechanism of Depression. An interesting study published in the journal “Archives of General Psychiatry” in 1994 suggests that individuals with no prior history of Depression but with a family history of this condition demonstrate a larger decrease in mood level after tryptophan depletion. This hypothesis is also consistent with theories that associate poor serotonin production ability as one of the probable causes of Depression.

L-tyrosine is an amino acid present in a moderate amount in protein-rich foods.

L-tyrosine is a biochemical originator for the production of the catecholamines: Norepinephrine, Epinephrine, and Dopamine, hormones of the thyroid glands and the skin pigment called melanin.

The mechanism of the L-tyrosine supposed antidepressant action is related to its role as a precursor in the synthesis of Norepinephrine, Epinephrine, and Dopamine. The increased brain levels of these neurotransmitters are associated with anti-depressive effects.
