Why is Vitamin D so important?

By Leonid Magidenko, MD.
Wednesday, February 06, 2008

Independent of any forms of diet, human skin has the ability to generate vitamin D from the cholesterol it receives through direct exposure to solar rays. Indirect exposure, such as sitting in front of the open window, is not effective. This is because the glass prevents penetration of the ultraviolet rays needed to activate the process of synthesis.

Molecules of vitamin D carry out one primary task for the human body which is assimilating calcium and its salts for their effective development. This is how vitamin D makes the human skeleton and the entire bone structure stronger and more stable. A sufficient supply of vitamin D is also critical for women’s health during the periods of menopause that involve loss of bone mass. Although 99% of all calcium in the human body is used for the needs of teeth and bones, the role of the remaining 1% is a very important one too. Calcium plays a major role in the process of transmission of nerve impulses to nerve cells and the brain. The ions of calcium use tiny channels to circulate between the membranes of cells and transmit the signal from one cell to another. Calcium gets involved in the exchange of hormones and neurotransmitters and the molecules transmit nerve and cognitive pulses to the nervous system. This complex process affects our ability to sense anxiety and optimism. Modern neurophysiologists consider calcium to be the best natural calming remedy. Calcium has been known for this incredible ability since ancient times. Even animals, driven by their instincts, tend to look for any plants with calcium (thyme, rosemary, dill, sage or marjoram contain almost 2 and a half %) to fight their stressful conditions caused by chase or hunt.

However, vitamin D is one important component needed for calcium to actively benefit human health. Scientists find increasingly more receptors for the “solar” elixir, especially in the immune system. Vitamin D is also useful for the increase of muscle strength. The results of one of the recent scientific studies on vitamin D showed that the cells within the nuclei of the vitamin turned out to be using the same receptors as estrogen. Insufficient vitamin D may lead to the atrophy of the bones. The study also indicated some specific kind of interaction between estrogen calcium and vitamin D that wasn’t known before. Clinical experiments revealed something that many practicing doctors have already been aware of. The ointments with the natural vitamin D3 decrease the scaly appearance of the skin which characterizes psoriasis. Although the pharmaceutical companies already synthesized the derivative of the vitamin D3 to treat psoriasis, it is now obvious that dyhidroxy vitamin D is effective too.

Women suffering from multiple sclerosis (a degenerating nerve condition) tend to have a low concentration of “solar” vitamin in the blood. The supplements of the vitamin increase total effectiveness of treatment of multiple sclerosis. Some suggest that better assimilation of calcium and magnesium helps the human body to restore the shielding shells that surround nerves.

There are certain facts showing that vitamin D increases the circulation of sugar in animals. One of the recent studies by Dutch scientists showed that elderly people with low vitamin D experienced serious lack of sugar metabolism and insulin. The purpose of current studies is to reveal any positive role that the supplements with vitamin D might play in treating those suffering from diabetes. Higher levels of the active vitamin D3 in the blood indicate lower indices of blood pressure. Another study conducted in a group of 666 women showed that the number of hypertonia cases was reduced by 40% when the tested group starting taking the supplements of the vitamin D and calcium. The specialist focused on oncology and dieting and questioned the effectiveness of the vitamin when it comes to malignant tumors of the thick gut. Other than that, the vitamin proved to be a big advantage.

  • There is also a solid potential of the vitamin to lower breast cancer cases. Those who consumed supplements with the vitamin and spent more time in the sun showed better results comparing to the opposite. The same can be said about the vitamin’s role in decreasing ovarian cancer.
  • The malignant cells of the prostate gland are vulnerable to the effects of vitamin D3. This makes it a good mean for preventive maintenance and treatment. The only disadvantage is the need for larger portions of the vitamin during a long period of time in order for some progressive improvement to be shown.
  • The lab tests showed vitamin D3 to prevent the spread of tumors as well as descending malignant increase by more that 50%.
  • The vitamin, tested on cells grown in a lab, also helped to decrease glioblastomy which is the most common form of brain tumor. It also helped to decrease leukemia cells.

Consequences of insufficient vitamin D

Sufficient vitamin D levels control the concentration of the calcium in blood, so that it will never go below the necessary level. Sufficient calcium levels guarantees strong and healthy teeth and bones. The strength of our teeth and bones may vary from hour to hour depending on nutrient reception. The worked off mass is replaced by the new one.The slight pain that may be experienced during the morning hours may be a sign of insufficient calcium in the human body. The ideal morning diet to maintain healthy levels of calcium in the human body is about 200grams of cottage cheese and lemon juice squeezed from two lemons. Other meals with enough calcium and vitamins C and D will also be sufficient. This regimen will not only help you in avoiding fatigue by lunch time, but also will strengthen the bones and protect them from frequent and easy breaks.

Regular exercising will also be a good addition to all of this. If the concentration of calcium in the blood falls (certain kinds of fried food may cause this), there is still a small number of paratormona that stimulates the production of vitamin D in the kidneys.

Along with that, the cells of the mucous membrane of bowels receive the task to transmit more calcium and phosphates in the blood. Now kidneys intensively retain calcium and do not let it come out in urine. Human bodies may also compensate for the lack of calcium by taking it out of the bones and directing it to the blood. This satisfies the nerve cells’ need for calcium. The necessary one percent of calcium in the blood may not fall under the one percent level. If it does, then muscle contraction can be reduced. This may cause the heart to stop. The protective function of the human body to prevent all of this relieson something call kalbinides that transfer calcium into the blood so it can form activeferments and proteins. One may suggest that the human body gives a first class ride to important minerals like vitamins and calcium.

The walls of bowels save sufficient numbers of calcium and vitamin D to take care of the minerals so that they return back to the bones and support the needed level of the substance in the blood. This may lead to osteoporosis.
