Nutrition supplement combinations to maintain Healthy Blood Pressure

By Leonid Magidenko, MD.
Tuesday, March 04, 2008

Natural blood pressure (BP) management formula combines several nutritional ingredients in one easy to use supplement recipe.

Dairy protein casein is the natural source of C12 peptide. C12 peptide functions as a natural inhibitor of Angiotensin Converting Enzyme. Angiotensin Converting Enzyme increases the concentration of Angiotensin, which is a biochemical compound acting as a constrictor of the blood vessels. C12 peptide effects of inhibiting this enzyme may aid to maintaining healthy blood pressure.

UC Davis study has shown a potential benefit of grape seed extract in preventing highblood pressure. The study had male and female participants identified as having Metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is distinguished by a number of risk factors present in one individual (increased fat tissue accumulation around and in the abdomen, abnormal cholesterol and triglycerides profile, high blood pressure, high fibrinogen and cardiac C-reactive protein level, certain hormonal imbalance etc). The medial drop in blood pressure detected in the group of grape seed extract recipients was 12 mm.

A study published in the Clinical Nutrition journal in 2004 reviewed the effect of Pomegranate juice on Carotid Artery thickness and high blood pressure. Pomegranate juice was found to reverse atherosclerotic plaque formation and to decrease blood pressure. A healthy blood pressuremaintaining effect was achieved bysuppression of the Angiotensin Converting Enzyme. Pomegranate juice not only decreased high bloodpressure, but also maintained healthy function of the endothelium (inner vascular layer).

Magnesium effects on maintaining healthy blood pressure have been researched by multiple studies. One study showed that 365 mg of Magnesium a day was effective to decrease high blood pressure in patients with mild to moderate form of hypertension. The study has demonstrated synergistic beta-blockers and Magnesium effects on reducing high blood pressure in the standing and supine position. Magnesium is opposed to calcium biochemical properties in respect to muscle contraction. So, it could be called a “natural calcium channel blocker”. Pharmaceutical calcium channel blockers are well known as a group of medication for the treatment of high blood pressure. It appears that Magnesium effects are synergistic with medications in maintaining healthy blood pressure.

In 1991 “American Journal of Clinical Nutrition” published a double-blind crossover study whichdemonstrated that 8 weeks of taking Omega 3 fish oil was effective in decreasing an elevated Blood Pressure in individuals older than 60 years. In 1993, “Archives of Internal Medicine” published a study suggesting that supplementation with more than 3 grams of Omega 3 fish oil may clinically reduce high blood pressure. A meta-analysis of 31 trials published in the “Circulation” journal in 1993 has demonstrated that there is a dose-dependent blood pressure reducing effect of Omega 3 fish oil. This effect may be more prominent in the high blood pressure patients with significant atherosclerotic changes and elevated cholesterol. These blood pressure reducing effects were related to the relaxation and widening of the vascular walls as well as optimization of the certain hydrodynamic blood properties.

Few animal and human studies have demonstrated that the amino acid Taurine may have blood pressure reducing effects. People with high blood pressure are likely to have higher than normal epinephrine levels compared to subjects with healthy blood pressure. Researches demonstrated that Taurine dilates vascular walls by increasing production of endorphin. This results in decreasing high blood pressure.
