Benefits of Omega 3 supplementation for people with Diabetes Mellitus

By Leonid Magidenko, MD.
Tuesday, March 25, 2008
  • Diabetes may lead to coronary-vascular disease. Omega 3 fatty acids help to prevent coronary-vascular disease. Omega-3 Fatty Acids reduce triglyceride concentration in people with Type 2 Diabetes which in turn, helps prevent coronary-vascular disease.
  • Omega 3 Fatty Acids lessen the insulin requirement by diabetics. Therefore, supplementing with Omega-3 may eliminate the need to start insulin injections, or may help reduce the insulin dosage already being used.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids reduce the degree of insulin resistance in individuals affected by Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Insulin resistance is one of the independent risk factors of developing Coronary-vascular disease. By reducing the insulin resistance, one may achieve better Diabetes control and lessen the chances of cardio-vascular complications.
  • Researchers at Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes and the University of Colorado at Denver have found that Omega-3 Fatty Acids may decrease the risk of developing diabetes autoimmunity in cases of Type 1 Diabetes. This form of Diabetes takes place when the body’s immune system attacks the pancreas, destroying the insulin producing cells. It seemed that by consuming more of Omega-3 Fatty Acids, kids were less likely to develop autoimmunity leading to Type 1 Diabetes.
  • There are also the claims that Omega 3 may decrease the risk among kids and teenagers with a family history of Diabetes of developing the disease.
  • A French study published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in December 2007 asserts that Omega 3 may reduce fat tissue mass among diabetic patients and improve their blood lipids profile, specifically lowering triglycerides.
Based upon these results one can conclude that Omega-3 Fatty Acids play an important role in preventing the onset of Diabetes and controlling Diabetes in cases where it has already has developed.
