For nearly 2800 years the Chinese have used extracts from the Ginkgo biloba tree to treat a variety of conditions to maintain the healthy normal function of the brain, cardiovascular, blood and blood vessels, circulatory, and metabolic processes. Ginkgo may:
- Help to maintain normal circulation
- Help to maintain the normal function and tone of blood vessels
- Maintain oxygen and glucose metabolism in the brain
- Prevent capillary fragility and blood leakage into surrounding tissue
- Help the normal function of factors that maintain a normal blood flow
- Maintain normal coagulation of blood
- Reduce tissue damage caused by low blood flow
- May help control radiation-induced brain edema invitro
- Help slow the aging process in the brain
Caution: Do not take more than 120 mg a day of ginkgo. If you are taking anticoagulants or MAO inhibitors, consult your doctor before taking ginkgo. Not for use by pregnant or lactating women. Ginkgo contains numerous antioxidants such as the proanthocyanidins and flavonoids, which counteract free-radical activity. Flavonoids are also known to strengthen capillaries, which can promote healthy blood flow to the brain, helping to maintain cognitive health. People often associate ginkgo with healthy cognitive function, but a review of hundreds of published studies reveals that this flavonoid probably benefits every cell in the body. In addition to maintaining healthy arterial function47 via several well-defined mechanisms, ginkgo also functions as a platelet aggregation inhibitor. Ginkgo biloba acts similar to a potent antioxidant and scavenger of most free radical species, such as hydroxyl and peroxyl radicals and superoxide anions. It is known to protect the energy-producing mitochondria in the cells, thus enhancing oxygen utilization and cellular respiration. Life Extension’s Ginkgo Biloba Certified Extract™ contains 24% ginkgo flavone glycosides and 6% terpene lactones. In addition to what is certified to be in the product, what is not in this extract is also important. The health regulatory agency that regulates ginkgo purity in Germany mandates that it not contain more than 5 ppm of ginkgolic acid. Life Extension’s low-cost ginkgo contains less than 1 ppm of this toxic part of the ginkgo leaf.

Caution
Ginkgo biloba extract is a potent antioxidant and scavenger of most free radical species, such as hydroxyl and peroxyl radicals and superoxide anions. It is known to protect the energy –producing mitochondria within the cells, thus enhancing oxygen utilization and cellular respiration. In a study to determine whether ginkgo extract could prevent age-associated cellular changes, the brain and liver mitochondria of old mice fed ginkgo extract in their drinking water was compared to those of young and old control mice. Mitochondria from the rats given ginkgo exhibited significantly less genetic damage, peroxide generation, and oxidation of the crucial antioxidant glutathione than the nonsupplemented rats. In addition, mitochondria from the old rats given the ginkgo extract resembled those of the young rats much more closely, being similar in size and morphology. The study concluded that standardized ginkgo extract prevents age-related decline in mitochondrial structure and function by protecting mitochondria from oxidative damage. The pharmaceutical grade botanical extract in Ginkgo Biloba Certified Extract™ has been concentrated and dual standardized to ensure the highest quality, consistency, and biological activity. The phytonutrient profile of Ginkgo Biloba Certified Extract™ is comparable to the Gbe 24/6 extract used in clinical studies worldwide and monographed in German Commission E. The health regulatory agency that regulates ginkgo purity in Germany mandates that ginkgo not contain more than 5 ppm of ginkgolic acid. Ginkgo Biloba Certified ExtractTM contains less than 1 ppm of this toxic part of the ginkgo leaf. Ginkgolic acid is a substance related to anacardic acid (poison ivy) and may cause an allergic reaction in some people. Ginkgo Biloba Certified Extract™ has the lowest ginkgolic acid level available. Ginkgo Biloba Certified Extract™ has high levels of ginkgolide B (>0.8%), which is the most studied terpene lactone, and thought to be a potent inhibitor of platelet activating factor (PAF). PAF is a powerful inflammatory mediator.
